National Defence Education

National Defence Education is an elective subject taught in upper secondary schools and vocational schools. It is worth studying national defence education because it is engaging, provides comprehensive knowledge about national defence, offers many practical skills, and presents a challenge to the daily school routine.

National Defence Education Curriculum

RiNational Defence Education is an elective subject consisting of two courses (totaling 70 hours):

  • Theoretical course “National Defence” (35 hours)
  • Practical course “Practical Training at the Outdoor Camp” (35 hours)

Since autumn 2023, the theoretical course “National Defence” has been mandatory for students entering upper secondary school. The practical course, conducted by the Defence League or a Defence Forces structural unit, is voluntary for everyone. Participation in the practical course or outdoor camp requires completion of the corresponding part of the theoretical course.

  • Contemporary military crises, wars, and armed conflicts
  • Estonia’s security and defence policy and national defence leadership
  • Defence Forces service
  • Drill training
  • Weapon handling and safety
  • Topography and orienteering
  • First aid
  • Internal security and civil defence

Practical training at the outdoor camp

  • Establishment of the outdoor camp and living conditions in the field, including catering and environmental protection
  • Individual and unit equipment
  • Topography and movement in terrain
  • First aid in field conditions
  • Shooting training

After completing the national defence education course:

  • You understand the importance of national defence.
  • You have good knowledge of Estonia’s national defence organization and security policy.
  • You know your options for participating in national defence.
  • You are better prepared for independent living.
  • You are well prepared for various crisis situations.
  • You are ready for military service.
  • You receive the silver badge of national defence education.

National Defence Education Badge

The National Defence Education Badge is awarded after successfully completing both courses of national defence education – “National Defence” and “Practical Training at the Outdoor Camp.” The silver badge is usually presented at a ceremonial event at school.

The design of the badge follows historical continuity, inspired by the national defence education badges used between the world wars. Its elements include a wreath of oak leaves, a flaming torch, and a sword.

  • If you have received the badge, you have the right to use its design on your business card, stationery, and other personal items, but not for commercial purposes.

Ordering badges from the Defence Resources Agency

To order badges from the Defence Resources Agency, a request signed by the school principal (on the school letterhead) must be submitted.
The request must include or attach a list of students who will receive the badge.
The digitally signed request should be sent to [email protected].
Badges are sent to the school by mail unless another delivery method is specified in the request.
